A sad but happy day for Harwoods.
Sunday 21st September 2008 was the day that we had to say goodbye to the first van purchased by Jim who founded Harwoods of London in 1989.
Unfortunately this year, Jim's eldest son James had to make the decision on what to with the van that Harwoods had kept on the road in memory of Jim. This was the time that we had to say goodbye to our keepsake as it would no longer be able to be used due to the new low emissions law that has been introduced by the government. The decision of what to do took a lot of soul searching but after long talks with the rest of the family it was decided that we should lay the van to rest with Jim. So on this cold but sunny afternoon, Janice, James, Christopher, Patricia, Kelly and the grandchildren James Jnr. and the latest edition to the Dew family little Macy, went to say goodbye. Another special touch was Phil Morrow, a family friend who was the first driver of the van, he too came along for this special day.
We all congregated round the van in the grounds of Our Lady of the Rosary Church in Blackfen where Father Timothy Finigan kindly allowed it to be parked off-road within the church grounds while we all deliberated what to do with the vehicle.
We took several 'photos of us all beside the van together with pictures of Jim's bike with little Macy in the basket and cousin James keeping a watchful eye on her. Jim was fortunate to see James Jnr. as a baby but died when he was three months old. He would be proud of the way James Jnr. looks after Macy and would love her as much as we all do.
Tinged with sadness we have to move with the times as well as keep up with the competition. Even though we no longer have the first van in the fleet, I am sure Jim would be very proud of the new fleet that carries on the family run business and name that he started.
Pictured below is one of our new vehicles purchased this year with temperature controlled load space. They are fitted with a temperature print-out delivery receipt for customer information and satisfaction. Another vehicle will be purchased this year and the rest of the fleet will be replaced early next year.
